Beneath the Surface

God Is Often Doing More Than We Can See.

Day 1 – The Hidden Work of God

"The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until all of it was leavened." Matthew 13:33

Jesus chose one of the smallest and most ordinary ingredients in the kitchen to describe the Kingdom of God.

Yeast disappears the moment it's mixed into the dough. No one sees it working. There is no dramatic display. No sudden explosion of growth. Yet over time, every part of the dough is transformed. That's often how God works in our lives. We tend to look for dramatic breakthroughs, immediate answers, and visible evidence that God is moving. But God frequently does His greatest work quietly in the unseen places of our hearts. You may not see immediate changes in your spiritual life. You may wonder if your prayers matter or if your daily time in Scripture is accomplishing anything. Don't mistake quietness for absence. God is working beneath the surface.

Day 2 – Renovation Takes Time

"He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Philippians 1:6

Anyone who has lived through a home renovation knows the process can look discouraging. Walls come down.

Floors disappear. Dust covers everything. For a season, the house actually looks worse than before. Yet the owner knows something better is being built. God's work in us often feels the same. Sometimes conviction increases before peace arrives. Old habits become painfully obvious. Areas we've ignored suddenly demand attention. God isn't making us worse. He's exposing what must be replaced. He began a good work, and He never abandons His projects halfway through.

Day 3 – Growing Deep Before Growing Tall

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2–4

Healthy growth usually begins where no one can see it.Roots develop before branches spread.Character forms before influence expands.James reminds us that perseverance produces maturity.We love instant results.God values lasting transformation.The waiting seasons of life often feel unproductive.Yet those seasons may be where God is strengthening your spiritual roots.Strong faith rarely develops quickly.It grows through ordinary obedience repeated over time.

Day 4 – God Changes Us Before He Changes Our Circumstances

Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. Romans 5:3–5

Many of our prayers begin with the words:"God, change..."Change my job.Change my spouse.Change my finances.Change my circumstances.Often God's answer begins with something different."I'm changing you."God's goal isn't simply improving our situation.His goal is transforming our hearts.Sometimes the greatest answer to prayer isn't a new circumstance but a new perspective.When our hearts change, we begin seeing even difficult situations through God's eyes.

Day 5 – Hidden Seasons Have Purpose

So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.” 12 So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.” 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.        1 Samuel 16:11–13

Before David wore a crown...he watched sheep.Before Moses led a nation...he spent decades in the wilderness.

Before Paul planted churches...he lived through years of preparation. God often prepares His servants in hidden places before placing them in visible positions. Our culture celebrates platforms. God develops character. Never assume your hidden season is a wasted season. Some of God's greatest preparation happens where no one else is watching. Faithfulness in obscurity often prepares us for future influence.

Day 6 – Becoming More Like Jesus

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22–23

Notice what Paul calls the evidence of God's work.Not achievements.Not titles.Not accomplishments.Fruit.

Fruit grows naturally from a healthy tree. It cannot be forced. The Holy Spirit gradually develops love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These qualities don't appear overnight.

They mature over years of walking with Christ. God's greatest desire is not simply that you do more for Him. It's that you become more like His Son.

Day 7 – Trust the Process

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. Romans 8:28–29

God invites us to live the same way.Trust Him when progress feels slow.Trust Him when answers seem delayed.Trust Him when your spiritual life feels ordinary.One prayer.One act of obedience.One conversation.One day of faithfulness.Over time, these ordinary moments become extraordinary because God is working beneath the surface.His ultimate purpose is not simply making your life easier.It is making you more like Jesus.

Throughout this week, pause each day and ask one simple question: "Lord, what are You changing in me today?"

Write down one way you see God shaping your heart—even if it seems small.
