"Thanks Anyway" - Week 4 Bible Reading Plan

7-Day Devotional: Thanks Anyway—Gratitude Toward Others
Based on Paul’s example of giving thanks in all circumstances.
DAY 1 — Gratitude in Imperfect Circumstances
Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:18 – “Give thanks in all circumstances….”
Devotional Thought:
Thankfulness is not the product of perfect conditions—it is the practice of seeing God’s goodness even when life is not good. Gratitude toward others starts with a heart that is anchored in the goodness of God. Paul wrote many of his letters in prison, in discomfort, uncertainty, and isolation. Yet he began almost every letter with gratitude—not bitterness.
Gratitude refocuses the heart. It turns what’s dim into an opportunity to praise God for the people He has placed in our lives.
- What circumstance feels least “thankful” right now?
- Who has God placed in your life that you may have overlooked because of that difficulty?
- “Lord, open my eyes today to see Your goodness and to see the people You’ve gifted me with. Help me choose gratitude even when circumstances feel heavy.”
DAY 2 — The People Who Actually Matter
Scripture: Philippians 1:3 – “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you.”
Devotional Thought:
We remember the people who shaped us—not the famous, the powerful, or the awarded. Paul knew this. His gratitude was always directed toward the people who partnered with him, prayed for him, and lifted him up.
You don’t need a platform or credentials to impact someone’s life—you just need love, presence, and kindness.
- Who are the “quiet heroes” in your story?
- Write down three names and one sentence of why you thank God for them.
- “Jesus, thank You for the people who have shaped my life. Help me remember them with joy, just as Paul remembered his partners in the gospel.”
DAY 3 — Gratitude Strengthens Relationships
Scripture: Philippians 1:3–5 - “I thank my God… because of your partnership in the gospel.”
Devotional Thought:
Gratitude tells people, “You matter. I see you. You are a gift.”
Elisabeth Elliot said, “A spirit of gratitude brings peace in our relationships, for it teaches us to receive others as gifts from God.”
Relationships grow when gratitude is spoken. When people feel valued, they feel strengthened. Paul’s friendships were deep because he thanked God for people regularly and told them so.
- What relationship in your life needs strengthening?
- How could expressing gratitude help bring new life into it?
- “Lord, help me see others as gifts. Teach me to speak gratitude in a way that strengthens the relationships You’ve given me.”
DAY 4 — Gratitude Encourages the Struggling
Scripture: 2 Thessalonians 1:3 – “We ought always to give thanks… because your faith is growing.”
Devotional Thought:
Paul didn’t just thank people when things were good—he thanked them when they were suffering. Gratitude can become fuel for someone who feels drained. Mark said in the sermon that gratitude “renews the fuel in our lives to live for God.”
Sometimes the most powerful encouragement is simply telling someone, “I see how you are growing. I thank God for you.”
- Who is struggling right now that you can encourage?
- How can gratitude become a form of support?
- “Father, put on my heart at least one person I can encourage today. Use my gratitude to strengthen their faith.”
DAY 5 — Gratitude Reinforces God-Honoring Behavior
Scripture: Philemon 1:4–7 – “I thank my God always when I remember you….”
Devotional Thought:
Paul didn’t just thank people for who they were—he thanked them for the way their faith refreshed the hearts of others. Gratitude doesn’t just celebrate good—it multiplies it. When people hear genuine thanks, it motivates them to continue living in a way that honors God.
Your gratitude may be the confirmation someone needs to keep going.
- What God-honoring behavior have you seen in someone else lately?
- Have you told them?
- “Jesus, help me call out the good I see in others. Use my gratitude to strengthen what You are growing in them.”
DAY 6 — Practical Ways to Show Gratitude
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:4 – “I give thanks to my God always for you….”
Devotional Thought:
Paul modeled practical gratitude:
He spoke it.
He prayed it.
He served people.
He spoke well of them behind their backs.
He remembered and celebrated them.
Gratitude is not just a feeling—it is action. A text. A prayer. A meal. A kind word. A moment of celebration. These small acts echo the love of Christ in the most tangible ways.
- Which expression of gratitude do you naturally lean toward?
- Which one do you need to practice this week?
- “Lord, move my gratitude from intention to action. Show me one practical way to bless someone today.”
DAY 7 — Gratitude That Shines in Hardship
Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 1:2–3 – “We give thanks to God always for all of you….”
Devotional Thought:
Paul’s gratitude was most powerful when life was most painful. The cold prison cell became a sanctuary of praise because he chose to lift his eyes toward God and toward others. Gratitude in hardship shines the brightest.
Your gratitude during difficulty may be the testimony someone else needs to see Jesus.
- How is God inviting you to show gratitude despite your current challenges?
- What is one “hard place” where you can still choose thankfulness?
- “God, help my gratitude shine even when life is difficult. Use my thankfulness as a witness of Your goodness to the people around me.”
