"Thanks Anyway" - Week 2 Bible Reading Plan

7-Day Devotional: God’s Goodness in the Gaps

Big Idea: Gratitude grows when we trust that God is working behind the scenes.

Theme: Gratitude doesn’t wait for the full picture—it thanks God in the middle of the mess because He’s still weaving.

“The Space Between” Every believer knows what it feels like to live in the gap: Life rarely ties itself into a pretty bow. Most of our stories are still being written. That’s why Romans 8:28 matters: God doesn’t say everything is good—He says He works everything for good. Gratitude is not built on what we can see—it is rooted in what God promised.

DAY 1 — God Is Working Behind the Scenes

Scripture: Genesis 50:20
“You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good.”

Joseph lived in the gap for years: Pit, Slavery, Prison, Waiting
But when Joseph looked back, he didn’t see random events—he saw redemption. During a play, the audience sees the actors, props, and lights. What they don’t see is the crew behind the curtain: moving sets, pulling ropes, changing scenes. You don’t see them—but without them, nothing works. In life, God is often working backstage. You may not see movement, but the scene is being changed.

Reflection:

  • Where does your life feel “stuck between acts”?
  • Thank God today for one situation that still feels unfinished.

DAY 2 — The Tapestry

Scripture: Romans 8:28

God doesn’t waste anything—not tears, not delays, not detours. If you’ve seen the backside of a tapestry, it looks like chaos: Knots everywhere. Loose strings. No pattern. But flip it over—and it’s beautiful. Faith flips the tapestry.

Corrie Ten Boom used to show audiences embroidery. The back was ugly. The front was stunning. She would say, “The back is what we see. The front is what God sees.”

Reflection:

  • What messy “backside” moments are you staring at right now?
  • Write this somewhere visible: “I may not see the full picture yet, but God is weaving.”

DAY 3 — God’s Editing Room Is Still Active

Scripture: Psalm 27:13
“I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord…”

Social media shows highlight reels—but nobody posts: the counseling session, the fight they had last night, the silent prayers at 2 AM, the job application rejected for the 7th time Behind every “perfect post” is a rough draft. An author never publishes the first draft. There are rewrites, edits, deleted scenes, added chapters. If God is the Author of your story, He is not done editing.

Reflection:

  • Where does your story still feel incomplete?
  • Send encouragement to someone who is in the middle of a waiting season.

DAY 4 — Gratitude Grows in Trust, Not Control

Scripture: Proverbs 3:5–6

Control says: “I’ll thank God when the outcome looks right.” Faith says: “I’ll thank God because He is right.”
A single puzzle piece looks random, misshaped, pointless. Joy comes when the piece is placed in the picture. If you judge life by one piece, it won’t make sense. Only when God finishes will you say, “Oh… that piece mattered.”

A woman once prayed for healing. She didn’t get it. But her struggle brought her husband and children to Christ.

Her prayer was answered—just not the way she imagined. God redeems differently than we plan.

Reflection:

  • What are you trying to control that you need to release?
  • Write these words: “God runs this, not me.”

DAY 5 — When You Can’t Trace His Hand, Trust His Heart

Scripture: Psalm 77:19
“Your path led through the sea… though Your footprints were not seen.”

When a train enters a dark tunnel, passengers don’t leap out. They trust the engineer. A missionary once said, “I don’t know what God is doing, but I know He hasn’t forgotten how to love me.” That’s trust.

Reflection:

  • Where does God feel silent? What would it look like to trust His heart there?
  • Say aloud: “I don’t need all the answers to give thanks.”

DAY 6 — Goodness in the Gap

Scripture: Habakkuk 3:17–18

Habakkuk praises God while the fields are empty, the barns are bare, and the future is uncertain. A farmer once pointed to an empty field and said, “I’ve already thanked God for the harvest.” He wasn’t praising because he saw crops— He was praising because he trusted the God who brings them. Gratitude is thanking God before the breakthrough.

Reflection
  • Where do you need to thank God in advance?
  • Write a gratitude list—not for what has happened, but for what God will do.

DAY 7 — God Isn’t Done Yet

Scripture: Philippians 1:6
“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…”

When a building is under construction, it looks messy: Dust everywhere Concrete exposed Tools in piles But the sign out front says:
COMING SOON Your life needs the same sign.

Reflection:

  • What unfinished areas in your life need a “Coming Soon” sign?
  • Write down 3 unfinished stories in your life.

Next to each, write: God isn’t done yet. Then thank Him—not for the gap, but for His goodness in it.
