 7-Day Devotional Week 2

WHEN YOU FEEL BEHIND

Text: Luke 24:13–35

DAY 1 — THE QUIET FEELING: “I’M BEHIND”

 “We had hoped…” (v.21)

There’s a sentence most people don’t say out loud:  “I thought I’d be further along by now.” Further in life. Further in faith. Further in healing. That’s exactly where these two disciples are living—“we had hoped…” Not present faith… but past expectation. It’s like opening your phone and seeing where your classmates ended up. Someone built a business. Someone has the family you wanted. Someone seems spiritually “ahead.” And suddenly you feel like you missed something. Not lost… just behind.  Feeling behind doesn’t mean you’re off God’s path—it may mean you’re in the middle of it.

Reflection: Where in your life are you quietly saying, “I had hoped…”?

Prayer: God, meet me honestly where I am—not where I thought I’d be.

DAY 2 — WALKING WITH JESUS… AND STILL FEELING LOST

“Jesus Himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing Him.” (v.15–16)

They weren’t far from Jesus…They were with Him. And still confused. We assume: “If I feel lost, God must be distant.” But this story flips that: You can be close to Jesus and still not recognize what He’s doing. Think about driving at night. Your headlights only show a small stretch of road. But you don’t panic because you can’t see the whole highway. You trust what you can see—and keep moving. Limited visibility doesn’t mean lost direction.

Reflection: Are you mistaking lack of clarity for lack of God?

Prayer: Jesus, help me trust Your presence even when I don’t understand Your plan.

DAY 3 — GOD DOESN’T LEAVE WHEN YOU DON’T GET IT

“He asked them, ‘What are you discussing?’” (v.17)

Jesus doesn’t interrupt them with correction. He asks questions. He listens. He walks with them. Even while they’re wrong. Think about a good coach. They don’t bench you the moment you mess up. They walk onto the field, stand next to you, and help you see what you missed. That’s what Jesus is doing here. God is not scared off by your confusion. Misunderstanding doesn’t mean abandonment.

Reflection: Do you pull away from God when you don’t understand—or press in?

Prayer: God, thank You for staying with me even when I don’t see clearly.

DAY 4 — GOD IS REFRAMING MORE THAN FIXING

“Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained…” (v.27)

Jesus doesn’t immediately fix their situation. He reframes their understanding. They wanted a different outcome.

Jesus gave them a deeper perspective. It’s like watching a movie halfway through. You think the story is going one direction… but then the ending reveals everything meant something else.  The problem wasn’t the story—it was your perspective. God may not be changing your situation yet—He may be changing how you see it.

Reflection: What if God is doing something deeper than what you’ve been asking for?

Prayer: Lord, help me see my situation through Your story, not just my expectations.

DAY 5 — RECOGNITION COMES IN ORDINARY MOMENTS

“He took bread, gave thanks, broke it…” (v.30–31)

They didn’t recognize Jesus in the conversation. Not on the road. Not in the teaching. At the table. In an ordinary moment. Sometimes the clearest moments with God don’t happen in big services…

But in:

  • A quiet morning with coffee

  • A random conversation

  • A moment of unexpected peace

And you think: “Wait… God is here.” God often reveals Himself in ordinary spaces, not just extraordinary moments.

Reflection: Where might God be showing up that you’ve overlooked?

Prayer: Jesus, open my eyes to see You in the everyday moments.

DAY 6 — YOU’LL SEE IT CLEARLY… LATER

“Were not our hearts burning within us…” (v.32)

They didn’t recognize Him in the moment…  But they recognized Him in hindsight. That’s how God often works.

Think about a sunrise. You don’t notice the exact moment night becomes day. It just slowly shifts… Until suddenly you realize: It’s already light. God’s work is often clearer in reflection than in real time. You may not see God in the moment—but you’ll recognize Him in the movement.

Reflection: Can you look back and see where God was working—even when you didn’t notice?

Prayer: God, give me eyes to trust today—and clarity to recognize You tomorrow.

DAY 7 — YOU’RE NOT BEHIND… YOU’RE ON THE ROAD

(v.13–35)

They thought they were leaving the story…But they were right in the middle of it. They weren’t behind. They were being formed. God doesn’t abandon the journey—He recalculates it.

  • Keep walking

  • Keep listening

  • Keep inviting God in

Reflection: What if you’re not behind—just not finished?

Prayer: Jesus, help me trust that You are walking with me—even here. Just because you don’t see Him doesn’t mean He’s not there. You may feel behind—but God is still walking with you.
