SMALL GROUP GUIDE: God’s Goodness in the Gaps
Big Idea: Gratitude grows when we trust that God is working behind the scenes.
Theme: Gratitude doesn’t wait for the full picture—it thanks God in the middle of the mess because He’s still weaving.
- What is something today you are grateful for—even if it’s not yet finished?
- When you hear the word gap, what kind of situations come to mind?
Life doesn’t come together all at once. Most of the time, we live between:
- Prayer and answer
- Faith and fulfillment
- Promise and reality
- Read Romans 8:28 (aloud)
- Why is it easier to thank God when the story is finished than when it’s still unfolding?
- How does believing God is at work change the way we handle “the gap”?
1. GOD IS AT WORK, EVEN WHEN IT LOOKS LIKE CHAOS
Read: Genesis 50:20
Joseph’s life is a picture of waiting, disappointment, and divine timing.
From pit → slavery → prison → palace.
- What part of Joseph’s story inspires you the most—and why?
- Have you ever had a situation that made sense only after God worked it out?
- When we only see the back, we assume it’s meaningless.
- When God turns it over, purpose becomes clear.
- What “knotted” parts of your story are hard to make sense of right now?
2. GOD’S EDITING ROOM IS STILL ACTIVE
Read: Psalm 27:13
We live in highlight-reel world. Everyone shows the finished product—but God is still writing our story.
- What “rough draft” parts of your life are you trying to hide?
- David said, “I will see the goodness of the Lord”—before he saw it.
What does that teach us about gratitude?
3. GRATITUDE GROWS IN TRUST, NOT CONTROL
Read: Proverbs 3:5–6
- We can fear the gap
- Or trust the God who fills it
The Puzzle Piece: A single puzzle piece looks useless—until it’s placed in the bigger picture.
- What is something in your life that feels like a “piece that doesn’t fit”?
- How can gratitude become a weapon against fear, stress, or worry?
4. SECTION IV — WHEN YOU CAN’T TRACE HIS HAND, TRUST HIS HEART
Read: Psalm 77:19
God led Israel through the sea—even though His footprints were invisible.
- Where does God feel silent or hidden in your life?
- What helps you trust God when you don’t see results?
PRACTICAL APPLICATION — “God Isn’t Done Yet”
This week, ask everyone to write down 3 unfinished stories—places where you are waiting, hurting, or unsure.
Next to each one, they will write:
