SMALL GROUP GUIDE THE GOOD SHEPHERD

John 10:11–15; Psalm 23

You are known, seen, and guarded by the One who leads you.

OPENER: When was a time you felt instantly calmer just because someone capable walked into the room?

(Parent in a storm. Coach on the sideline. Doctor entering the ER. A leader stepping into chaos.)

Fear doesn’t calm down when we understand everything. Fear calms down when someone stronger is near. That’s the claim Jesus makes in John 10.

READ TOGETHER

    - John 10:11–15
    - Psalm 23 (read in more than one translation if possible)

1. SHEPHERDS WALKED WITH THE SHEEP

Shepherds didn’t drive sheep from behind — they led from the front. “He leads me…” (Psalm 23) God is not pushing you with fear. He is walking ahead of you. Shepherds cultivated trust through proximity.

Discussion:

  • Do you tend to picture God pushing you or leading you?

  • What voices are you currently following?

  • Where do you need clarity — and are you staying near His voice?

Formation Connection: Maturity isn’t about becoming independent of God. It’s about training yourself to remain close.

2. THE SHEPHERD KNOWS YOUR VOICE — AND YOUR WOUNDS

“I know my sheep…” (John 10:14)

There’s a difference between knowing about someone and knowing them.

The Good Shepherd:

  • Knows which sheep limps.

  • Knows which sheep wanders.

  • Knows the terrain.

  • Knows the threats.

Discussion:

  • Where do you feel unseen right now?

  • Is it easier for you to believe God loves people… or that He knows you personally?

  • What would change if you lived like you were truly known?

Reminder: He doesn’t love a future version of you. He protects the real you.

3. THE SHEPHERD DOESN’T RUN WHEN DANGER COMES

Jesus contrasts Himself with a hired hand. A hired hand protects sheep for a paycheck. A shepherd protects sheep because they belong to him. “The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” The cross proves this.

Discussion Questions:

  • When trouble hits, do you instinctively feel alone?

  • How have you seen Jesus meet you in a valley season?

  • What “wolf” are you facing right now?

Protection doesn’t always mean prevention. Sometimes it means presence in the valley. Psalm 23 doesn’t say if you walk through the valley — it says when. But it also says: “You are with me.”

4. SHEEP SURVIVE BY STAYING CLOSE

Sheep are not strong animals. They survive by staying near the shepherd.

Left alone:

  • They wander.

  • They eat what harms them.

  • They fall into places they can’t escape.

Sound familiar? We rarely implode because of bold rebellion. We drift because of distance.

Discussion:

  • Where might distance be quietly growing in your life?

  • What habits help you stay close?

  • What practices help you recognize His voice?

Formation Reflection: Spiritual maturity isn’t self-sufficiency. It’s trained closeness.

5. PROTECTION DOESN’T MEAN CONTROL

We love control:

  • Savings accounts.

  • Backup plans.

  • Schedules.

  • Strategies.

But Psalm 23 doesn’t say: “The Lord gives me control.” It says: “The Lord is my Shepherd.” That means I’m not.

And that’s freeing.

Discussion Questions:

  • Where are you trying to control what God is asking you to trust?

  • Does your peace rise and fall with your level of control?

  • What would it look like to follow instead of manage?

REFLECTION:

  • Where have I been trying to outrun instead of stay near?

  • What voice have I been following lately?

  • Am I living guarded — or alone?

PRACTICE:

Choose one:

  1. Voice Practice: Spend 5 minutes daily reading Psalm 23 slowly.

  2. Closeness Practice: Add one intentional moment of prayer before a decision this week.

  3. Distance Check: Identify one area where drift has begun — and take one step back toward closeness.

CLOSING PRAYER PROMPT: “Jesus, Good Shepherd, Some of us feel strong. Some of us feel tired. Some of us feel embarrassed that we keep drifting.Thank You that You do not run when danger comes. Teach us to recognize Your voice. Train our hearts to stay near. Help us trust Your presence more than our control. Amen.”

REMINDER: You are not guarded because you’re strong. You are guarded because He is good.Your safety isn’t found in control — it’s found in following.
