Small Group Guide HE IS — The True Vine

John 15:1–8

The life we long for grows only when we stay connected to Jesus.

GROUP OPENER

What is something you tried to grow (plant, garden, hobby, project) that didn’t turn out the way you expected?

Or Have you ever unplugged something and wondered why it stopped working? The goal is to move the group toward the idea that life depends on connection to a source.

I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitfulYou are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothingIf you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. John 15:1–8

Listen for repeated words or key ideas. What word or phrase stands out most in this passage?

IDEA #1 The Vine Is the Source of Life

John 15:5 “Apart from me you can do nothing.”

Jesus does not describe Himself as a helper to life. He describes Himself as the source of life. Branches don’t generate life. They receive it. The same is true spiritually. Patience. Love. Wisdom. Peace. These things flow from Christ, not from our own effort. This echoes Acts 17:28In Him we live and move and have our being.”

Discussion:

  1. Why do people often try to live the Christian life through effort instead of connection?

  2. What are some signs that someone is trying to “produce fruit” without staying connected to Jesus?

  3. Where in your life do you most need to reconnect to Christ right now?

IDEA #2 The Gardener Is Forming Fruit

John 15:2 “Every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.”

Pruning looks painful, but it is actually a sign of care.

A gardener cuts back growth so the plant can produce better fruit.

Sometimes God removes things from our lives:

• distractions

• habits

• relationships

• comforts

• false priorities

Not because He is angry — but because He wants greater fruit.

Discussion:

  1. What is something difficult you went through that later produced growth in your life?

  2. Why is pruning often misunderstood in the Christian life?

  3. What might God be “trimming” in your life right now?

IDEA #3

Abiding Is the Secret of Fruitfulness The key word in John 15 is remain/abide.

Remain/abide means:

• stay connected

• dwell

• continue

Fruit grows naturally when the branch stays connected to the vine. It is not forced.

We are not transformed by trying harder — but by staying connected to Christ.

Discussion:

  1. What do you think “remaining/abiding in Christ” actually looks like in everyday life?

  2. What practices help you stay spiritually connected to Jesus?

  3. Why do you think Jesus emphasizes remaining/abiding instead of achieving?

IDEA #4

Disconnection Leads to Withering

Jesus warns in John 15:6 that branches that do not remain connected eventually wither. The danger is subtle.

A branch can look alive for a while. In the same way, someone can still:

• attend church

• know the language of faith

• appear spiritually active

But if connection with Christ fades, the soul slowly dries. Spiritual vitality always flows from relationship, not just activity.

Discussion:

  1. What are warning signs that someone may be spiritually disconnected?

  2. Why is it possible to stay busy in church while losing connection with Christ?

  3. What helps keep your relationship with Jesus personal and alive?

PRACTICE — HOW WE ABIDE

What helps you stay connected to Jesus during the week?

Examples might include:

• Scripture reading

• prayer

• worship music

• gratitude

• serving others

• silence and reflection

• Christian community

Encourage each person to share one practice that helps them stay connected.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Where in your life do you most need to reconnect with the Vine?

GROUP PRAYER

Close the group by praying together:

• Thank Jesus for being the source of life.

• Ask God to help everyone stay connected to Christ.

• Pray for fruit to grow in each person’s life.

AKEAWAY

The Christian life is not sustained by striving. It is sustained by connection. Fruit doesn’t grow from pressure.

It grows from abiding.
Stay connected to the Vine.
