SG GUIDE HE IS — The Door
John 10:7–10, Revelation 3:20
Jesus is not just showing the way to God—He is the entrance into life with God.
GROUP OPENING
What is a door in life that changed everything for you? Examples might include: First job, Marriage, Moving to a new place, Becoming a parent, A difficult decision that changed your future.
Doors represent transition. One side holds what has been. The other side holds what might be. In John 10, Jesus says something remarkable: “I am the door.” He is not pointing to the way to God. He is the entrance into life with God.
READ THE TEXT
So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. John 10:7–10
1. THE DOOR PROVIDES ACCESS
In the ancient world, sheepfolds often had stone walls with a single opening. At night, the shepherd would lie across that opening. The shepherd himself became the gate. Nothing entered without crossing him. Jesus uses that picture and says: “I am the door.”
Life with God is not accessed through:
• religion
• moral improvement
• spiritual performance
It begins with a relationship with Jesus.
Discussion
- Why do you think Jesus used the image of a door to describe Himself?
- How is following Jesus different from simply trying to be a “good person”?
- Have you ever struggled with feeling like you had to earn God’s approval?
2. THE DOOR PROVIDES PROTECTION
Jesus continues the teaching with a contrast. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” (John 10:10)
Sheep are vulnerable animals. They cannot defend themselves. Their safety depends entirely on the shepherd. Jesus is saying something deeply reassuring: Life with Him includes protection. Not the absence of problems—but the presence of a Shepherd.
Discussion
- What are some ways the “thief” tries to steal life from people today?
- Where do people commonly look for security besides God?
- How does trusting Jesus as protector change how we face fear?
3. THE DOOR REQUIRES A DECISION
Jesus does not force anyone through the door. He invites. A door can be:
• visible
• open
• unlocked
But nothing changes until someone walks through it. Faith is not just learning about Jesus. Faith is stepping through the doorway of trust.
Discussion Questions
- Why do you think people sometimes hesitate to fully trust Jesus?
- What keeps people from stepping through the “door” spiritually?
- What does faith look like in everyday life?
4. JESUS ALSO KNOCKS
Revelation 3:20 “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.”
In John 10, Jesus says He is the door. In Revelation 3, Jesus is standing at the door of our lives knocking.
He provides the entrance to life with God. But He also waits for us to invite Him into every area of life.
Discussion
- Why do you think Jesus knocks instead of forcing entry?
- Are there areas of life people sometimes keep closed to God?
- What does it look like to open those areas to Christ?
PERSONAL REFLECTION
• What “doors” have you pursued in life searching for meaning?
• Where do you most need to trust Jesus right now?
• Is there an area of life where Jesus may be knocking?
APPLICATION
Jesus makes a promise in John 10:10: “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” Abundant life is not about having everything we want. It means life connected to God.
A life that is:
• grounded in truth
• guided by purpose
• guarded by the Shepherd
Practice Step This Week
Encourage each group member to take one step:
• Spend time each day with Jesus in prayer or scripture.
• Ask God to reveal any “doors” you are trusting instead of Him.
• Invite Jesus into an area of life where you need His leadership.
CLOSING THOUGHT
Picture the ancient shepherd lying across the entrance of the sheepfold. The sheep inside sleep peacefully.
Why? Because the shepherd himself is the gate. That’s the picture Jesus gives us. Not a distant guard. Not a locked system. A Savior who says: “You don’t have to find the way. I am the way in.”
CLOSING PRAYER
Jesus, thank You for being the door to life with God. Help us stop chasing empty promises and trust You fully.
Give us the courage to step through the door You have opened and live in the freedom, safety, and purpose You provide. Amen.
