Focal Passage: Matthew 28:16–20

Opening Describe a time when you knew something was true but still struggled to fully understand what was happening. How did you respond?

When you were a child, what was something you believed was impossible until you saw it with your own eyes?

Read the Passage

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:16-20

Worship and Hesitation Can Exist Together

Key Truth: The disciples worshiped Jesus, yet some still hesitated. Their doubt was not unbelief, it was uncertainty about what they were experiencing and what would come next.

Discussion

  1. What stands out to you about the phrase, "they worshiped him; but some doubted"?

  2. Why do you think the disciples might have struggled to fully grasp what they were seeing?

  3. How does understanding the meaning of distazo/doubt (hesitation, wavering) change your view of this passage?

  4. Have you ever experienced a season where you trusted God but still had questions?

  5. Why is it encouraging that Jesus commissioned the disciples without first demanding perfect understanding?

What area of your life currently requires you to worship and trust Jesus even though you do not have all the answers?

Jesus Has Authority Over Every Circumstance

Key Truth Before Jesus tells the disciples to go, He reminds them who is sending them. The mission rests on His authority, not their ability.

Discussion

  1. Why do you think Jesus began the Great Commission by declaring His authority?

  2. How might this statement have encouraged the disciples as they faced an uncertain future?

  3. What circumstances in your life seem difficult or beyond your control right now?

  4. How does knowing Jesus has "all authority in heaven and on earth" change the way you view those circumstances?

  5. Which is easier for you to trust—your own ability or Christ's authority? Why?

Dig Deeper Read: Romans 8:28; Ephesians 1:20–23; Colossians 1:16–18

What do these passages teach about the authority and power of Jesus?

What is one situation where you need to stop relying on your own strength and trust Christ's authority instead?

The Addendum of Assurance

Key Truth Jesus ends the Great Commission with a promise. He does not simply give a mission; He gives His presence. "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Discussion

  1. Why do you think Jesus ended His instructions with this promise?

  2. How is Jesus' presence different from simply receiving His help?

  3. What fears or concerns might the disciples have had that this promise addressed?

  4. When have you experienced God's presence during a difficult season?

  5. How does Christ's promise of His presence encourage you to obey Him today?

Where do you need the reminder this week that Jesus is already present in the place He is calling you to obey?

Bringing It Together

Read These Statements

  • Faith is not the absence of doubt but the decision to worship Jesus while seeking understanding.

  • Because Jesus has all authority, there is no circumstance where He cannot make a way, accomplish His purpose, or work for His glory.

  • Wherever obedience takes you, Jesus is already there.

Discussion Which of these truths do you need most right now, and why?
