Beneath the Surface - God is Often Doing More Than We can See.

Question: What made waiting difficult?
Scripture: "The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until all of it was leavened." Matthew 13:33
Introduction
Jesus often described God's Kingdom using ordinary things. A treasure. A mustard seed. A fishing net. Today...Yeast. Once yeast is mixed into dough, you can no longer see it. But that doesn't mean it isn't working. In many ways that's how spiritual growth happens. Most of God's greatest work happens beneath the surface before anyone ever notices it. Tonight we'll explore how God quietly transforms us from the inside out.
1. God's Kingdom Works From the Inside Out
Jesus compares the Kingdom to yeast. Yeast doesn't sit on top. It works from within. God often chooses to change our hearts before He changes our circumstances.
Read "He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Philippians 1:6

Why do you think we often expect spiritual growth to happen quickly?
Why do you think God usually works more slowly than we would prefer?
Have you ever realized God was changing your attitudes before He changed your circumstances?
Which is harder for you—waiting for God or trusting God while you wait?
Digging Deeper The sermon compared spiritual growth to remodeling a house.Sometimes renovation looks worse before it looks better.Can you remember a season when your life felt "under construction," but later you saw what God was doing?
2. Deep Roots Produce Lasting Fruit
The bamboo illustration reminds us that healthy growth begins beneath the surface.
God values roots before fruit.
Read Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2–4
Questions
What do trials produce according to James?
Why do we naturally resist slow growth?
What roots do you think God may be developing in your life right now?
Which spiritual quality has taken the longest to develop in your life?
Reflection: Complete this sentence:"I wish God would hurry up and ________." Then ask: Could God actually be doing something deeper than what I'm asking for?
3. Before God Changes Your Situation...
He Often Changes You Many of our prayers focus on changing circumstances. God often begins by changing us.
Consider these examples:
“I want God to change my spouse." God teaches forgiveness.
"I want God to change my workplace." God teaches patience.
"I want God to change my finances." God teaches trust.
"I want God to change my children." God changes my own heart.
Questions
Which of these examples resonates with you?
Has God ever answered your prayer differently than you expected?
Looking back, are you thankful He worked on your heart first?
4. Hidden Doesn't Mean God Is Absent
Sometimes we assume that because we cannot see results, God must not be working. Nothing could be further from the truth. David's preparation happened in fields. Moses' preparation happened in a wilderness. Paul spent years in obscurity. Even Jesus lived approximately thirty years before beginning His public ministry.

Why do hidden seasons often feel discouraging?
Have you experienced a season where God seemed silent but later you recognized His work?
Why do you think God values preparation so much?
Reflection Where do you currently feel "hidden"?How might God be preparing you there?
5. God's Goal Is Christlikeness
Romans 8 tells us God's ultimate goal. Not comfort. Not convenience. Not success. Christlikeness.
Read But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22–23
Questions
Which fruit of the Spirit is easiest for you?
Which one is most difficult?
Which one do you believe God is growing in you right now?
Reflection: Notice that fruit grows naturally. It isn't forced. What practices help you stay connected to Christ so His fruit can grow?
Going Deeper
Consider these statements.
Which one do you most need to hear this week? Why?
God is working even when I cannot see Him.
Waiting is not wasted.
Character matters more than appearances.
God is changing me before He changes my circumstances.
Small acts of obedience produce lasting transformation.
Weekly Challenge
This week ask yourself each morning:
"Lord, what are You changing in me today?"
Instead of focusing only on what you want God to change around you, pay attention to what He may be changing within you.
Choose one practical response this week.
Forgive someone.
Spend ten minutes in prayer each morning.
Practice gratitude instead of complaining.
Respond patiently instead of reacting quickly.
Encourage someone quietly without seeking recognition.
Write it down.
