SMALL GROUP STUDY GUIDE THE BREAD OF LIFE
He Is Our Sustainer
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35
One-Line Truth: What your soul is hungry for, Jesus already is.
OPENING
When you’re physically hungry, how do you usually respond?
Plan a healthy meal? Grab fast food? Snack constantly? Ignore it until you crash?
Now shift it spiritually: When you feel spiritually dry, what do you usually reach for first?
READ THE TEXT
“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” John 6:35
PART 1 — FULL STOMACHS, EMPTY SOULS
In John 6, the crowd had just experienced the miracle of multiplied loaves. They came back looking for another meal. Jesus didn’t give them more bread. He offered Himself.
Discussion:
- Why do you think the crowd wanted another miracle instead of understanding what Jesus meant?
- Where do you see “relief-seeking faith” in today’s culture?
- What’s the difference between wanting Jesus to fix something and wanting Jesus Himself?
Key Insight: Many want Jesus for relief. Few want Him for life.
PART 2 — BREAD IS SURVIVAL, NOT A SIDE DISH
In the first century, bread wasn’t optional, it was daily survival. Jesus wasn’t saying, “I’m a spiritual bonus.”
He was saying, “I’m your necessity.”
Discussion:
- In your current life season, would you say Jesus is: A supplement? Support? or a sustaining center?
- What competes most strongly for being your “daily necessity”?
PART 3 — THE “SNACK DRAWER” LIFE
Many of us are spiritually snacking:
- Quick verse
- Podcast clip
- Worship song in traffic
- Prayer when stressed
Snacks prevent starvation—but they don’t build strength.
Discussion:
- Where do you see “spiritual snacking” in your life?
- What would daily nourishment look like for you personally?
- Why is consistency harder than intensity?
Why do we often prefer emotional spiritual highs over steady daily rhythms?
PART 4 — RELIEF VS. NOURISHMENT
Relief fixes a moment. Bread reshapes your life. The crowd wanted provision without dependence. Blessing without surrender. Relief without relationship.
Discussion:
- Have you ever followed Jesus mainly because you needed something?
- What would it look like to seek Jesus even if He didn’t immediately solve your problem?
- How does daily dependence feel different than emergency faith?
PART 5 — WHAT YOUR SOUL IS REALLY HUNGRY FOR
Underneath our surface desires (success, comfort, control) are deeper longings:
- To be known
- To be secure
- To be forgiven
- To matter
- To rest
Jesus says: “I am.”
Reflection: Ask: What am I actually hungry for right now? Now ask: How might Jesus meet that deeper hunger?
APPLICATION — MOVE FROM SNACKING TO SUSTENANCE
This week, choose ONE consistent rhythm:
- Scripture before phone
- Prayer before email
- Gratitude before scrolling
- Five quiet minutes before noise
Not to earn God’s love. But because bread is daily.
What one rhythm will you practice this week?
Who in this group will check in with you?
PRAYER PROMPT
“Jesus, we don’t want You as a supplement. We want You as our sustainer.”
CLOSING DECLARATION (Read Together)
“Jesus, You are not an add-on to our lives. You are our life. You are our daily bread.
What our souls are hungry for— You already are.”
