SMALL GROUP GUIDE — HE IS GREATER

Text: John 11:17–27; 1 John 4:4

One-Line Truth: Whatever you’re facing, Jesus is already bigger.

INTRO: WHEN LIFE FEELS TOO BIG

Icebreaker :

  • What’s something recently that felt “bigger than you”? (Keep it as light or deep as the group is comfortable.)

  • The “Zoomed-In Screen” When you zoom in too far on a picture, all you see are pixels. Blurry. Distorted. Confusing. That’s what fear does. It zooms in so tightly on your problem that it becomes all you can see..

Discussion:

  • Why do you think we naturally “zoom in” on problems?

  • What are some ways fear distorts reality?

  • What would it look like to “zoom out” and see your situation through faith?

Key Insight: We don’t need better explanations—we need a bigger view of Jesus.

1. WHEN WE LIMIT GOD TO THE FUTURE

Read: “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” John 11:21–24

Discussion:

  • In what ways do you relate to Martha’s “someday faith”?

  • Why is it easier to trust God for the future than for right now?

  • Where in your life are you saying, “I believe… just not here”?

Teaching Reminder: Resurrection isn’t just an event—it’s a Person.

Application: What would it look like to trust Jesus in your current situation this week?

2. FEAR MAKES PROBLEMS LOOK BIGGER THAN THEY ARE

Read: You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 1 John 4:4

Discussion Questions:

  • What are common “fear messages” people believe today?

  • How has fear exaggerated something in your life before?

  • What changes when you focus on who Jesus is instead of what you fear?

  • Shadows in the Dark: As a kid, shadows felt real. A chair became a monster. A coat became something terrifying. But the moment the light came on… The fear disappeared. Not because the object changed— but because the light revealed the truth. Share a time when something seemed overwhelming… but later wasn’t as big as it felt.

Key Truth: Fear magnifies the problem. Faith magnifies Christ.

Application:

  • Think of a fear you are facing.

  • Then reframe it together with:  “Jesus is greater than ______.”

3. JESUS DOESN’T JUST FIX DEAD THINGS—HE DEFEATS DEATH

Read: Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” John 11:25–26

Discussion:

  • What’s the difference between “improvement” and “resurrection”?

  • Where do people tend to settle for “Jesus improving life” instead of transforming it?

  • What area of your life feels “too far gone”?

Key Truth: Resurrection is not resuscitation—it’s new life.

Application: What would it look like to believe that Jesus can bring life into that “dead” area?

4. THE REAL QUESTION: DO YOU BELIEVE?

Read: And whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” 27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world. ”John 11:26–27

Discussion:

  • Why do you think Jesus asks Martha a question instead of giving more explanation?

  • What’s the difference between understanding and trusting?

  • Where is God asking you to trust Him right now?

  • The Bridge You Can’t See: Imagine walking across a bridge in the dark. You can’t see the end. You don’t know how far it goes. But someone you trust says: “Walk with me.”

  • Have you ever had to trust God without knowing the outcome? What happened?

Key Insight: Faith isn’t having all the answers—it’s trusting the One who does.

GROUP RESPONSE MOMENT

Activity:

Ask the group and complete this sentence:  “Right now, I need to trust Jesus with __________.”

THIS IS WHY EASTER MATTERS

  • The stone didn’t just move then — it still moves things now

  • Death didn’t just lose then — it still loses now

  • Jesus isn’t just alive then — He is alive right now

Discussion: How does the resurrection change how you face your current situation?

Whatever I’m facing, Jesus is already bigger.

Pray through three simple movements:

  1. Name It — God, here’s what feels bigger than me…

  2. Surrender It — I give this to You…

  3. Trust Him — You are greater than this…

This conversation is less about “having the right answers” and more about helping people:

  • See Jesus bigger

  •  See fear smaller

  • Take one step of trust this week
